Two Nests: What We Find (and Leave Alone) at Wild Woods

The creek at Wild Woods Retreat & Farm runs the length of the property. Over time, we've given names to three spots along it: Otter Beach, where the treehouse, fire pit, picnic table, and hammock sit right at the water's edge. Elder Cove, shaded and quieter. And, Bottled Bay, where a hand-painted sign nailed to a mossy tree reads, simply: Hang a Bottle, Leave a Wish.

That's the whole idea. Make a wish, whisper it into a bottle, hang it from a branch. Like this blue glass bottle that’s already up, there are dozens catching the light coming through the leaves. We didn't build Bottled Bay to be a destination with a schedule or an instruction sheet. It's a spot on a creek that runs through thirty acres of woods and pasture. The invitation is open-ended on purpose.

Guests at Wild Woods tell us, over and over, some version of the same thing: that the quiet here is what stays with them. No WiFi at the dome. No cell signal to speak of along most of the property. And no schedule handed to you at check-in. Just land to walk, a creek to follow, and enough time that a wish whispered into a bottle doesn't feel silly. It feels like the point.

Bottled Bay isn't a manufactured "experience." It's a place that exists because the creek exists, and because somebody thought a wish tree belonged there. If you're staying at Orion, it's an easy walk down the Lane, our quarter-mile wood-chip path that forks toward each ridge. Bring a bottle if you want to leave something behind, or just go sit there for a while and see what's already hanging in the branches.
